Haven't touched this in a while, but I recall all stones always get thrown in the end. It does seem a bit weird when it's specifically after exhausting the opponent's while having the troll reach him. Do I want to special-case that? Not presently.

The AI tried to print 0 twice during seed 4731795994182010900 but it was caught and instead printed a 1. This was using the approach of mimicking the AI's throws - 1. It does this on quite a few occasions. Since getting it, I haven't been able to reproduce it. The other method I tried that also brought this error is just a sequence of decisions, ``` if opponent_stones == initial_stones: print(2) elif troll_distance < 2: print(int(stones*.1)) elif road_length - troll_distance < 2 and stones > opponent_stones: print(stones) elif stones < opponent_stones: print(random.choice([1, 2])) else: print(int(initial_stones/(stones+2))+1) ```

I have found a bug where the AI sometimes prints a 0, which causes it to lose. Not game destroying but something that I assume is an easy fix :) Not as simple as it looks!

Even after reading the description and trying the puzzle, I'm not sure what the rules are for how the troll moves left and right. It seems to be always 1 unit in the direction opposite of the most stones, but then sometimes he moves multiple units at once, which confuses me.

It's always one (or zero) move. I'm not sure how you could get the impression he moved multiple units at once. Can you reproduce? (it could be the fact the road can have different lengths from a game to the other. The screen length is always the same, but steps are shorter if the road length is longer within that viewport. But this should be made completely clear with the HUD.)

This is pretty cool. I'm not sure if I missed it, but I thinking mentioning that the player who threw more stones is the player that'll push the troll. Overall though, it's a simple concept that could lead to some neat tactics

Well, the explanation of the game could still be improved a lot. For example it states nothing about how the troll moves. I guess it moves to the side that throws less stones. but this is not explained anywhere. What means "cheating is tolerated"? Can you throw stones you don't have? What are the rock and ice troll?

The rules used to say "you can figure this out", and I honestly think it should never have changed. If you hesitate between different interpretations of the rules, put them to the test. What means "cheating is tolerated"? That means if your opponent does something that shouldn't logically be possible, they're probably cheating and it's allowed. Try to understand what they did and use that too. (but don't complain when your cheat gets fixed in upper leagues) What are the rock and ice troll? No idea. Please tell me when you find out. Interesting idea and I am even more interested about what solution people will come up with ! I have a small addition to the gameplay I would like to share: when the troll is in your half of the field, one could imagine that your soldiers are more motivated to harnest stones. Meaning that if the troll is in your half of the field, then your number of stones increases little by little. By adding this mechanic, I think you add more depth to the gameplay. Indeed you are encouraged to keep the troll in your half, at the limit so as to accumulate stones and only then attack brutally. What do you think ?

Or you could increase the cost of using stones. Meaning that if the troll is n tile closer to your castle, your opponent needs n more stone to beat you.

This project is cool. Maybe, you could add some extra rules during a turn. For example, during turn one, the winner just move the troll for one unit. In the second turn, the winner move the troll for X random unit, etc. This mechanics permit to have dynamic move during the game. The choice of the rule for calculating the winner and the reward can be done randomly

This is a great game. Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I had 2 ideas: 1) An idea I had for increasing complexity: at the moment the troll only ever moves 1 step - but maybe you could have 'momentum' where a player winning multiple rounds gets the troll to build up speed and cover more steps per turn? This would reward winning multiple rounds in a row. 2) Another spicier rule would be that you cannot throw the same number of stones 2 turns in a row, unless you threw 1 stone the previous turn and you only have 1 stone left. All in all, this is a magnificent game - and I would play it in its current form even if the above were not included, these were only ideas.

Thank you for your input. I'm running late on implementation, but the roadmap is now a bit more final than it was in the beginning: complexifying the game as such was deemed "always possible, but not really interesting as far as the gameplay was concerned". It's just a matter of "meh, implement changes", but doesn't seem like it will change the strategies drastically, so we kept the simple version. The extensions will only address the "too random" aspect of the game by adding multiple rounds. The inertia aspect *is* interesting, I think it could warrant an experimentation, along with a couple of suggestions from the thread. But in a separate game.

I guess your bot is cheating since it posts some seed as a message? Seems wierd anyhow that it uses 1 stone to throw 2.

Yes, it cheats. Note that, while its inputs are worthless, it's not supposed to use up any more stones than you are.

Navigating through a replay with the arrows is not very rewarding. Would be nice if there was some sort indication of what will happen on the next turn?

Ok so I finnally got my exam on this subject, and so one question was about adding the following rule: "p1, p2 number of stones threw. If p1 > p2 + 2, the troll is moving two cels away instead of one." I think this might be a nice rule adding more strategy.

While on the surface I like your rule, it will change absolutely nothing in my code and approach. Would it actually change anybody's ? If a new rule doesn't change the way the game will be approached, I am in favor of sticking with the smaller simpler purer ruleset. The only positive effect I can see is if it favors sending more stones each turn --> shorter games --> more games within the 600 frames budget. Haven't conducted a detailed analysis on this.

I like the big rotating "STUPID" sign coming out when you run out of stones. But that is just me, some people might find that offensive.

This is the kind of game that would be perfect as a hidden contest :) "Hidden contest:" 4 hour contest where players could only play vs the default bot and no games were played on submit. After 4 hours, every player will start submission games. 10 games or more vs every other player on the leaderboard (not only close in rank) Winner with most wins afterwards. Kinda like Prisoner's dilemma as nobody knows what the others are going to do?

I like the game a lot. Other than what @AntiSquid said on the forum on adding elements / life points / abilities, Variable maps/stones is necessary, throwing 5 stones is too unfairly effective in this map. The code print(5) which I used should not have gotten this far. Will approve when it comes out, nicely done @JBM

Thank you for your comment. Well obviously print(5) is more effective than the current meta's print(2). You could probably generalize to print(2*stones/roadLength). But it's only going to get you so far O:-)

Small visual issue. If you step through the game using the slider with the arrow keys the troll speak is not displayed. It is displayed if you scroll down in the game information panel using the arrow keys.

That's... a feature. The troll's sayings are (supposed to be) transient, as in "starts a war and moves on leaving as little proof as possible". I'm not quite sure what that "scroll down in the game information" procedure is.

Another observation wrt the overridable parameters such as roadLength, it might be beneficial to have this available in the Options->Manual part of the IDE rather than having to do it in your code. Alongside the game seed. Thoughts?

It can't be done in player code; it's already possible to override as a manual parameter in the IDE. I'm not sure how to push it back from the referee to the IDE/why it isn't already the case.

As of today, it seems that most players have deterministic AIs on the leaderboard. While this is not a bad thing, when there are only 4 different maps, it is easy to imagine that player A might beat player B by chance on those 4 maps, even if on a wider selection of maps they would be similarly matched. If you keep such a low number of maps, this strengthens the need to beat the current leaderboard and weakens the need to "play well overall". As written on the forum, I believe *beat the leaderboard* is a legitimate design objective. I wouldn't welcome it on all multis, but if this is this multi's originality and focus, I'm fine with it. Choice for you is "how strong to make this focus". I have a slight preference for random maps with a range between the four fixed maps you provided.

One more thing. I really liked the the fact that with trhee (four in fact) integers you get the complete image of the actual game's state; No need to historize, It is so concise that it will appeal all types of programmers. Your choice : a simple game for many, or a complicated game for few.

Hi JBM, Your game is refreshing. at last no fog of war. The graphics are ... post modern, but you know I cannot draw aswell. May be I'll ask my son if he can help. - Your insturctions about the end of game are not very clear. I understood the game was over once one of the palyers has no stones left. Instead the game continues and one must continue to play against an opponent with no stone. - I did not find the maximum allotted time. Maybe I am the only one to do a search. By dichotimy I found 60 ms but I guess I am on the edge. - To conclude, I am afraid it will become a big shifumi game once every one has an almost bugfree algorithm.

this looks a bit too simplistic as it is, imo the castles should have life points so you don't instantly lose just because the opponent guessed a good sequence vs you. troll gets reset to the middle after it reaches a castle this way it's more similar to a ball game, where the troll is the ball and the castles are the goals also maybe there should be set amount of stones for a set amount of turns? you could get as input "turns_until_stones_get_recharged"? this will be the difficult part to balance maybe if you do offer ways to increase stone count maybe there are better more unique ways to improve but i don't know.

The castle life points is a great idea. We were looking for ways to trick the system into repeating matches so player bias could actually be exploited, and that's just the correct wrapping for it! I'm not so hot for a stone reinforcement cooldown right now... but who knows :) It *is* an interesting extension.

This looks like a child's game so childish graphics are OK. Please NO fog of war ! The statement should say what the game is. Remove the blurb on the breaking change and say simply what roadLength is for. To be honest, I did not understand anything of it. This text belongs to the comments/forum. Publish: there are already many people on the leaderboard

(nor is the empty protocol section, FTM) It's nice to have people on the leaderboard, but I can't in good conscience publish when I believe a closed solution is around the corner. At least not in the current state.
